The Ladies Gaelic Football Association was founded in 1974 in Hayes Hotel, Thurles, Co Tipperary. Galway was the only county from Connacht who attended that meeting. Galway and Roscommon took part in the first official competition played at senior level. In 1976 the same two teams played in the final with Mayo winning their second Connacht title. Mayo were going for three in a row in 1977, once again their opponents being Roscommon, who overturned the table to take their first title. | | Junior Join the Action 2002 took on a whole new meaning in Connacht where we hosted double header Junior and Senior Championship Connacht Finals in McHale Park, Castlebar. Also we secured a major sponsorship deal as well as a Perpetual Senior Championship Cup from CBE of Claremorris The ladies of Galway and Mayo made history in 2002 in Croke Park when they won Junior and Senior All-Ireland Championships and the following day both teams joined hands to carry the Brendan Martin and the West County Cups across the bridge in Athlone into the West. This was history in the making for the ladies of Connacht we may never see the likes again. Interprovincial Competitions In 1977 Connacht were runners up to Munster. We won the next two titles in 1978 1979 by beating Leinster. It was 1984 when we appeared again in the final when Munster beat us again. In 1989 Leinster beat us. It took us until 1997 to reach the final stages again and since then we contested four finals in a row. We beat the Combined Colleges in Castlebar in 1997; 1998 Leinster beat us; 1999 Ulster beat us, 2000 we beat Leinster. The competition was not played in 2001 due to the Foot and Mouth epidemic. In 2002 Ulster and Connacht contested the final, with the honors going up North. |  Leirim Ladies Football Team All-Ireland Junior Champions 1988 | | All-Star Players Many ladies in Connacht have received All Star Awards as well as local and National awards for their achievements in ladies football. The All Stars have the honour of playing an exhibition game against the Senior All-Ireland champions each year. In 1999, 2000 and 2002 these games have taken place in Fr Gibbons Park, Claremorris, Co. Mayo. |
