Banada Abbey Hall, Tourlastrane, Co. Sligo was the venue for the Connacht GAA Scór na nÓg Finals on Saturday January 23rd. This was the first time that a Connacht Final had been held at the venue since 1989 and the locals did a great job in making the supporters and competitors feel at home. Events got underway just after 3pm and the first result of the afternoon to be known was from the Question Time competition where the Ballinameen team of Laura McDermott, Finbar McDermott and Gerard McDermottroe claimed an impressive victory. They missed just one question and scored 54 points out of 60 in defeating Claremorris from Mayo (44 points), St. Farnans from Sligo (34 points) and Sean O'Heslins from Leitrim (46 points). This was the ninth year in a row that the Question Time title was won by a team from Co. Roscommon. As usual, with all Scór events, the Question Time is followed by the Novelty Act and Set Dancing competitions. The results are then passed to the Bean an Tí, who announces the winners, so all of the other competitors have a long wait to learn their fate. Before presenting the winners with their medals Frank Burke, the Chairperson of the Connacht GAA Scór committee, paid tribute to Bean an Tí Frances Hanley, and everybody who helped make the day such a success. In particular he mentioned all of those who helped out at club level and keep the competition going from strenght to strenght. In the Figure Dancing, the competition that opened the day's proceedings, Glencar - Manorhamilton from Co. Leitrim retained the title. Dancing "The Cross Reel" they defeated St. Dominics from Roscommon, Castlebar Mitchels of Mayo, St. Brendans from Galway and Sligo Champions St. Molaise Gaels. Leitrim made it two in a row when James Hazlett, from Drumkeerin took the Solo Singing title. He saw off Emma Brogan from Strokestown, Co. Roscommon, Mayo champion Emma Mc Loughlin from Ballaghadereen, Roisin Killgannon from St. Farnans, Co. Sligo and Claregalway's Deirdre Brennan with his rendition of "The Shores of Lough Bran". Next up was the Instrumental Music competition and despite good performances from Clann na nGael of Roscommon, Leitrim Gaels, St. Farnans from Sligo and Mayo's Bonniconlon, reigning champions Corofin held on to the title with their performance of "The Mouse in the Mug" and "Reel Gan Ainm". Then it was on to the second "solo" competition, Recitation. Last year James Murray from the St. Dominics club in Co. Roscommon was the champion (James later went on to win the All-Ireland) and this year the title also went to Roscommon - to Grace Dooley of the Padraig Pearses club. Her performance of "The Manager" had the audience in fits of laughter and she overcame the challenge of Aaron O Donnell from Aughnasheelin, Maria Regan from Caltra, Tricia Kay Hughes from Ballinrobe, Roisin Killgannon from St. Farnans. The Ballad Group competition is always very close and this year was no exception with the title going to Galway champions Caltra, a club that last won the All-Ireland title in 2005. They sang "Eoghainín Ó Ragadáin" and "Inis Oirr" and defeated St. Dominics from Roscommon, Mayo champions Aghamore, St. Marys from Sligo and Mohill from Leitrim. Ballinameen, of Co. Roscommon, were the next team called on stage to receive their medals for their earlier Question Time triumph. A very competitive Novelty Act competition was won by Sligo club St. Farnans. Their play entitled "Wired to the Moon" defeated reigning All-Ireland champions Mountbellew-Moylough from Galway, St. Dominics of Roscommon, Kilfian from Mayo and Leitrim champions Feenagh St. Cailins In the last competition of the day, Set Dancing, Abbeyknockmoy retained their Title. Dancing the Cavan Reel they defeated Roscommon champions Strokestown, Burrishoole of Mayo and Feenagh St. Cailins from Leitrim The attention now turns to the All-Ireland Final in the Count John McCormack Hall, Athlone I.T. on Saturday February 20th (For ticket information please contact your clubs Culture and Irish Officer / Scor Officer).
